This painting is in recognition of the NAIDOC theme for the year 2023,‘’FOR OUR ELDERS”. NAIDOC is a time to celebrate and embrace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, their Culture, their Heritage and their History. Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander Culture is the oldest continuing Culture on the Planet. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People are inextricably bound to The Country, Sky, Rivers, Sea, Waterways and the Environment around them. Before European Settlement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People lived a nomadic existence traversing this vast, diverse landscape freely. Each group made its own way living life following the laws laid down for their Country by the Spirit Ancestors in the first creation and that is how it has been for thousands of years, ensuring the survival of life-giving water sources, animals, plants…….. Our Elders are our living connection to this Ancient Civilisation.

Our Elders through Our Song Lines, Our Dreaming, Stories, Ceremonies, Art, Dance, Language…….. have ensured the survival of Our People, Our Country and Our Culture from generation to generation. Our Elders have enriched our lives, fought for a better life for us all and empowered past and present generations and are forging the way forward for future generations. Our Elders are our Precious Treasures who need to be respected and nurtured and their wisdom, resilience, strength and survival recognised.
