Noongars live by a six-season calendar.

Noongar people knew when the seasons changed by weather patterns, the movement of the stars, the behaviour of the birds and the lifecycle of the plants. The Six small circles in the painting represent the seasons Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba, Kambarang and Birak.

The large circle in the middle of the painting represents the Noongar people living within that knowledgeable framework.

It is an important part of Noongar culture to take only what you need from country to maintain biodiversity. By eating foods only when they are abundant and in season, natural resources are not depleted and will still be available for next year.

As guardians of our country, we achieved balance and adaptability through thousands of years of living in harmony with the bush.
