A Celebration of Noongar Seasons

Experience the South West’s seasonal bloom with our exhibition celebrating Noongar seasons Djilba and Kambarang.

Djilba and Kambarang are when Wadandi families move from inland winter shelters towards the coast, with families coming together to enjoy the abundance of bush tucker.

The Noongar Season ‘Djilba’ is represented by the colour pink as it symbolises growth of wildflowers and plants. This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the South West.

Kambarang is represented by the colour yellow: Beginning with the yellow flowering plants such as the acacias and finishing up with the striking displays of the Moodjar(Australia Christmas Tree). The weather gets warmer, the days longer and the tides bigger. It’s a time of transformation.

First Nations people have long been caretakers and keen observers of the natural rhythms of life in the bush. Their deep knowledge of flowering plants offers valuable insights into the availability of food, bush medicines, and sources of water. This knowledge is crucial, as animals drawn to these plants will frequent those areas when food is plentiful. Ultimately, the entire ecosystem in the bush revolves around an understanding of the plants that support and sustain life.

Art and Wildflower Display

These stories and knowledge are shown through Indigenous art, all over Australia. Discover wildflowers, bush foods, and artworks inspired by their cultural and ecological significance, alongside a special display of native plants curated by artist Jannica — a vibrant celebration of growth, abundance, and connection to Country.
