A Celebration of Colour

Celebrating the spectacular South West spring and the Noongar seasons of Djilba and Kambarang, the exhibition brings together contemporary Aboriginal artworks inspired by bush flowers, bush foods and Country, alongside a beautiful display of locally sourced wildflowers throughout the gallery.

Djilba is a season of transition, when the cold and wet of winter begins to ease and the first signs of spring emerge across the South West. Often represented by the colour pink, Djilba brings new growth and the beginning of the spectacular wildflower displays for which this region is renowned.

As the days become warmer and longer, Kambarang brings an abundance of colour to Country. Represented by yellow, the season begins with flowering plants including acacias and continues towards the striking displays of the Moodjar, or Western Australian Christmas Tree. It is a time of warmth, growth and transformation, with increasing activity throughout the natural environment.

For Noongar people, the changing seasons are understood through close observation of Country. Flowering plants, weather, animal activity and other changes in the landscape can signal the availability of bush foods, medicines and water, with this knowledge passed through generations and continuing to connect people with Country.

Across Australia, Aboriginal artists share their own relationships with Country through works depicting bush flowers, seeds, fruits, medicines and traditional foods. Bush Flowers & Foods 2026 brings these stories together, creating a colourful celebration of the plants, places and seasonal changes that inspire artists from different Countries and communities.

Throughout the exhibition, artworks will be complemented by a beautiful display of local South West wildflowers, bringing the colours of Djilba and Kambarang into the gallery and creating a connection between the works on the walls and the Country surrounding us here in Yallingup.
