Seven Soulful Activities for Winter in the Margaret River Region

Discover art, culture, and connection this winter in the South West with Seven Soulful Activities.

As the cool winds roll in and gentle rains sweep across Noongar Boodja, winter in the Margaret River region reveals a quieter, deeper beauty. This season is a time for stillness, reflection, and connection—with nature, culture, and creativity. At Yallingup Aboriginal Art, we believe winter offers a perfect opportunity to explore soulful experiences across the South West. Here are seven meaningful activities to inspire your journey this season.

1. Gaze at the Night Sky and Connect with Culture

Clear winter nights are perfect for stargazing. Step outside and look up at the Seven Sisters (Pleiades) constellation—central to many Aboriginal Dreaming stories. Artists from Utopia and the Central Desert often paint this celestial journey. Their work reminds us that winter in the Margaret River region connects us to the stars and ancient knowledge.

2. Watch Whale Migrations at Cape Naturaliste

Each winter in the Margaret River region, whales glide along the coast on their annual migration. Visit Point Picquet or Cape Naturaliste for a breathtaking view of humpbacks or southern rights breaching offshore. In Noongar culture, whales are part of ancient rhythms—more than just a spectacle, they are a story of time and spirit. Visit the Margaret River Region official site for whale-watching tips or visit our friends at Naturaliste Charters for an up close and amazing whale watching tour.

3. Walk Through Rain-Kissed Forests

After the rain, Meelup and Boranup forests come alive. Eucalyptus trees release their scent, and soft trails carry the marks of wildlife. Artists like Yondee Shane Hansen capture this seasonal beauty—stories etched in rock, bark, and light. A forest walk in winter is a journey through living memory.

4. Explore the ideal Caves Road Art trail

Rainy wintery days are perfect to explore cosy art galleries.Caves road is blessed with a number of wonderful galleries/artisans close to Yallingup Aboriginal Art. Visit our friends at Yallingup Galleries , Yallingup Studio Gallery and John Miller Design for the perfect winters’ art trail. Both our gallery and Yallingup Galleries are blessed to have a cellar door on site, so you can enjoy beautiful tastings whilst emersing yourself in the artworks, and enjoy the company of creative energy.

5. Join a Cultural Experience or Art Workshop

Some cultural experiences continue in the off-season. Look for bush tucker walks, weaving workshops, or storytelling sessions with Noongar Elders. Josh Whitelands Cultural tours based out of Ngilgi Caves are still a firm favourite. You can also drop into Yallingup Aboriginal Art any time—we’re always happy to share the stories behind the art and delve deep into the history and connection of the dreamtime stories.

6. Cosy up by the fire

Nothing says Winter in the Margaret River Region than a warming glass of cabernet by the fireside. Our favourite cozy nooks in winter include the Pour House, Swings and Roundabouts, Caves House and Eagle Bay Brewery. It’s the perfect way to spend a chilly afternoon, inviting you to slow down or sip and plan what wintery activities to do next.

7. Visit Three Families business’ in a one stop shop.

Yallingup Aboriginal Art is located on 3057 Caves Road, alongside our friends Jilyara Wines and Yallingup Maze and Mini Golf. Have a game of golf or get lost in the maze. Stop and do a puzzle with a cuppa. Enjoy a wine tasting and cheese board and chat with the team from Jilyara before stepping into our cosy gallery space and warm the soul.
