The Noongar Six Seasons by Megan Corby is a vibrant reflection of seasonal change, cultural knowledge, and lived experience on Boodja (Country). Megan, a Noongar emerging artist from the South West, draws on personal memories and ancestral practices to interpret each of the six Noongar seasons through a contemporary lens.
In Birak (Karla Boodja – Fire Country), she captures the intensity of summer heat and the cultural importance of controlled burning — a practice used by Ancestors to care for the land, encourage regeneration, and sustain life.
Bunuru (Kep Koort – Water Heart) reflects her upbringing as a saltwater child, recalling time spent fishing and crabbing with family. It speaks to abundance, respect for resources, and the joy of gathering and sharing food.
Djeran (Wardiny Maya-Maya – Looking for Camp) represents a time of transition, when movement inland and preparation for cooler months became essential. Megan connects this to childhood memories of camping and witnessing the landscape shift.
In Makuru (Boongoorang – Blowing in the Wind), the wild and unpredictable nature of winter is expressed through flowing forms and cool tones, capturing both the calm and chaos of seasonal winds across Country.
Djilba (Djet Karta Werta Boodja – Flower Across Country) marks renewal, as colour returns to the land and the first signs of warmth emerge. It reflects anticipation and the beauty of Country coming back to life.
Finally, Kambarang (Koort Kobori – Heart Dance) celebrates energy, movement, and abundance — a season of vibrant colour and connection, where community life flourishes.
Together, this body of work honours the rhythm of the Noongar seasons, blending cultural knowledge, family memory, and a deep connection to Country.
