Aboriginal ceremonies and ritual, including corroborees are held for many different reasons. The main reason is to pass down stories and knowledge. The beliefs, stories and lore are individually owned and kept secure by specific members of a language group.

Ceremonies could involve people from different Aboriginal language groups. After Feasting and shared ceremonies, elders and lore would get together to discuss important lore business. Members would bring gifts and trade items such as food, raw materials or special products.
